Lance Roebuck, wearing a worried frown, drew rein and stretched in the saddle. The fingers of night were stretching across the hills to clutch the sunset away. Frank Dawson, now hoping to be Jack Stone’s replacement as top dog, came alongside him.

‘Clancy can’t have vanished into thin air, Lance,’ he said.

‘We’ve been all over these damn hills,’ Roebuck snarled. ‘Not a darn sign.’

‘Clancy’s a drunk. Likely that he fell off his nag into a ravine.’

‘Then where’s his horse?’ Roebuck quizzed.

‘Probably gone with him,’ Dawson reasoned.

Roebuck considered Dawson’s theory, but rejecting it he concluded, ‘He’s got to be somewhere in these hills. In his condition, Clancy wouldn’t have the spit to ride far.’

Frank Dawson became thoughtful.

‘You know …’

Roebuck barked, ‘I won’t unless you tell me!’

‘Well, I’ve been thinking. What’s the most important thing in Clancy’s life, Lance?’

‘Whiskey,’ Roebuck said without hestitation.

‘Yeah. Whiskey. And what do you find in the hills. Moonshine.’

Roebuck’s spirit bucked up.

‘You’re right, Frank.’ Then, somewhat deflated, his eyes searched the hills in the gathering gloom. ‘But there could be a million stills. And you’d probably never find a single one.’

Dawson said, ‘We could start with the Irishman. An hombre called Bantry O’Shea.’ He licked dry lips. ‘Brews the sweetest mountain dew you’ll ever sup. And if Clancy’s not there, I reckon that with a little persuasion, O’Shea will point the way to the other stills.’

Lance Roebuck’s grin was a smug one.

‘You know, Frank. You’re a real smart fella,’ he complimented. ‘So what’re we waiting for?’

‘Better to wait for first light now,’ Dawson counselled. ‘These trails ain’t the same at night as they be by day. I reckon we should set up camp, and not risk injury to man or beast, Lance.’

Dawson’s suggestion did not rest easy with Roebuck. However, he soon saw the good sense of his henchman’s caution.

‘Camp, it’ll be,’ he said.
